Proverbs 13:22: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”

Wisdom from Above

In today’s fast paced modern society, sometimes we forget to review great wisdom found in the world’s oldest scriptures. We are inundated with gurus and personal development coaches that offer “how-to” guidelines on current philosophies of success. I find it interesting that often their cutting-edge advice can be found buried in the book sitting on most of our grandmother’s coffee table – the Bible.

I am not a bible scholar, and I’ll leave biblical exegesis to the clergy and seminary graduates. But I would like to take look at this particular scripture and mine it for its richness.

The Goal of Wealth

Sometimes I question what it means to be wealthy in today’s world. Is it obtaining a certain financial amount? Year after year, I feel like that threshold amount continues to rise. Nothing is certain about reaching a particular threshold dollar amount in the future. And is the purpose of obtaining wealth simply to spend it during my lifetime?

A Good Man Leaves An Inheritance

That’s why I love Proverbs 13:22. It takes an age-old question and makes the answer easy to understand. A good man or woman should strive to leave behind an inheritance for their children. But it doesn’t end there. The inheritance should extend to their children’s future children as well.

This sure sounds like generational wealth. For many of us, this short scripture offers wisdom on the purpose of our hard work – to create a system of wealth that lives beyond us and provides for generations to come. Simply put, we want to create a legacy for our families.

My Question to You

What steps are you taking today to leave behind an inheritance for your family? Will you create processes today that will ensure that your inheritance will extend to your children’s children? How would you describe your legacy?
